Access to the PhD Study - 4+4 PhD PROGRAM

The 4+4 program is a way to commence the PhD study whilst simultaneously completing the master program

In the 4+4 programme the candidate is initially simultaneously enrolled as a master student and as a PhD student during the first two years (part A).

Following this, the master degree is completed and the PhD enrollment carries on for another two years (part B). Read more about the 4+4 PhD program.

PhD studies at Aalborg University

At Aalborg University (AAU), you can apply to become a PhD student without being employed at the University.

For applicants from universities that do not apply the Bologna Declaration, the educational level will be checked.

Enrollment without employment (stipend) requires external funding from governmental institutions, private funding or employment in an organization located in Denmark. Depending on the mode the grant oppertunities will be different.

It is a requirement that you are employed in a Danish company or a Danish department of an international company.

Co-financed PhD studies

If your employer or another party is willing to finance all or part of your PhD studies, it is possible to collaborate with AAU on a PhD project, provided that the project is strategically and academically relevant for the doctoral school.

PhD assessment without programme enrolment

You can also submit material for assessment in order to obtain a PhD degree without having been enrolled in a PhD programme.

The study will take three years (full time) and you will be supervised byone of the researchers at the centre and receive competent feedback from the other PhD students at the Centre.

When studying for a PhD degree you will become a part of The Department of Planning.

Examples of projects undertaken at The Aalborg PBL Centre are:

  • PBL epistemologies – research on fundamentals and the philosophy of PBL within any social context and cross socio-cultural contexts.
  • Variation of PBL approaches – research on diverse approaches to PBL practices including curriculum, course design, implementation, assessment methods and evaluation of PBL outcomes.
  • PBL competences – research on diversity of PBL related competences.
  • PBL, digitalization and Networked Learning– research on PBL and
  • PBL development in a digital world.
  • PBL and interdisciplinarity – research on disciplinary and interdisciplinary aspects of PBL
  • PBL and culture – research on diverse culture and intercultural issues related to teaching and learning in PBL.
  • PBL implementation and organizational change – research on how PBL can be implemented in various social, organizational and cultural contexts.
  • PBL and sustainability – research on how PBL support the sustainability of higher education

Access to the PhD Study - 5+3 PHD PROGRAM

As a standard requirement a Danish master degree or equivalent is required for all PhD students at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science (120 ECTS points).

Library courses for PhD students

Aalborg University Library offers three one-day courses for PhD students at AAU:

  • Academic Information Searching: methods, sources, and documentation - a one-day course focusing on systematic and structured information searching and related subjects (1 ects)
  • Health Scientific Information Searching: Hands-on training and methods for conducting a systematic search - a one-day course focussing on systematic and structured information searching and related subjects.

    Self-financed PhD studies

    You can apply for enrolment as a self-financed PhD student, which means that you will pay all costs connected to your studies.

    These costs will depend on the individual Doctoral School and PhD programme.

    Industrial PhD studies

    You can apply for enrolment as an industrial PhD student in cooperation with the company where you are employed and the relevant doctoral school. The course is prepared in collaboration with the Medical Library at Aalborg University Hospital (1 ects)

  • Scholarly Communication in an Open Science Perspective - a one-day course focusing on the research ecosystem, including publishing, metrics and dissemination (1 ects)
