“In keeping with its race-room roots, this ski will not disappoint,” reassured Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, skier Brady Newton. There aren't many skis out there that feel as limitless and smooth as the Montero AR.

Who is this for? If you have other ideas about where and how to ski the Laser AX— good luck to you, let us know how that goes.

The Montero AR has an on-piste focus, so crud and hard bumps can be more challenging to navigate, though they’re not completely out of the ski’s wheelhouse. The Montero AR costs north of $1,300, which is the average price of a plane ticket to Switzerland these days. It's a bit more precise and powerful in a turn, has a touch more energy, while also being a hair easier in the turn initiation department.

The result of the race/all-mountain marriage and DNA file-share is a smooth ride that excels at groomers. Easier turn initiation just widens the range of skiers who can ski the Montero effectively -- again, a good thing. At 84mm wide it handles chopped-up crud, or heavy wet snow well, but these skis are built to crush hard-pack and groomers. “The extra-smooth feel, superb edge, and carving acumen are all wrapped into a polished, beautiful ski.”

Jake Stern, a bootfitter from Mammoth Lakes, California, called the Montero AR “a ski instructor’s dream.” When pros log more than 100 days on snow for work, they want a tool for the job that allows them to make high-performance turns without the fatigue of a World Cup construction.

That was a day at Breck in January and it hadn't snowed in 7ish days.

After reading the reviews on the RC One 86 GT that sounds like it should be a contender.

This is a true groomer-slaying machine.

If Stöckli’s arc-oriented Laser GS and the all-mountain Montero AX begat an offspring, it would be the Montero AR. “The Montero AR is very much your ‘I want to make a good turn’ ski,” said Otto Gibbons, who skis Washington’s Crystal Mountain regularly.

Skiers who hate carving.

Stöckli Laser AX (2020)

Men’s Review

The Laser AX once again pleased former racers and recreational carvers with its wide range of capabilities at a variety of speeds. Though the 16-meter radius trends toward longer turns, our team was impressed by the Montero AR’s range of shapes and its effectiveness in transitions.

Testers said it fit in perfectly at this year’s test site, excelling on the long, steep groomers at Sun Valley, Idaho.

Stöckli added a new waist width last season in the all-mountain Montero line, and at 84 millimeters underfoot the Montero AR blends race-ski performance with an all-mountain ethos. Compared to previous generations of this ski our testing team finds this one to be a bit more forgiving.

Never felt the speed limit.”

STRENGTHS: Stability at Speed, Quickness

WEAKNESS: Versatility

It has plenty of torsional stiffness to really bite and hold on groomers, but a more modern tip shape and rocker profile to take on off-piste areas.

I would still give the nod to the Stocklis for their pure carving ability over the Fischers, but only when the snow is more challenging.

It's hard to make a mistake when a ski is only $275.

The new and improved Stockli Montero is still one of the best frontside carving skis ever to hit the hill.
